German Schmear Houston

German Schmear is a decorative exterior finish that adds textural intrigue to any home built with bricks. This technique reveals glimpses of the underlying base color through a skillfully applied top “smear” layer in a contrasting hue.

The result is a unique application with old-world charm and appeal. Also known as German smear, this type of application produces one-of-a-kind finish, transforming your home into a custom work of art

German Smear FAQs

Unlike faux painting that simply mimics the appearance of stone, German smear uses colored concrete layered by hand for depth and an authentic stonework finish.

We offer a wide range of German Schmear styles including traditional finish, rustic finish, mortar wash, and slurry finish. Our goal is to bring your unique vision to life.

While a small DIY German schmear project is certainly possible, we don't recommend taking on an entire house application without professional experience.

The layered hand-crafting technique requires specialized skills to create the desired undulating stone texture. Without proper mixing, application and sealing, DIY finishes tend to appear flat and fake.

While German schmear can technically be removed, the process would be as intensive as the initial application. But it does mean you don't have to commit to a permanent faux stone treatment if your tastes change years down the road. Our experts can advise on removal considerations before starting a project.
