Stucco Siding Maintenance Tips

If you're a homeowner with stucco siding, keeping up with basic maintenance is key for preserving your exterior's durable and decorative finish. With proper care, a quality stucco job can last over 50 years! Here are some of our top tips for making your stucco siding look its best while avoiding bigger repairs down the road:

  1. Inspect Annually: Plan to do a visual inspection of your stucco at least once per year. Examine the entire surface, paying close attention to areas around windows, doors, patio covers, and any protrusions. Look for hairline cracks, holes, loose stucco, drainage issues, previous repairs, etc. Checking for minor damage regularly makes repairs far less costly.
  2. Clean Every Few Years: While stucco itself doesn't need heavy-duty cleaning (just hose it down!), the dirt that accumulates does. Have your exterior professionally pressure washed every 2-3 years. Be sure they use a wide fan tip and keep it at least 8 inches away from the stucco. Stay away from abrasive cleaners.
  3. Re-seal When Needed: Check for areas that have become more porous and prone to retaining moisture. Every 7-10 years, have a contractor re-seal these susceptible parts of your stucco siding. This prevents water intrusion leading to internal damage.
  4. Repair Cracks Promptly: Don't ignore small hairline cracks in your finish coat. Left untreated, water can seep in causing further deterioration. Use stucco caulk or patching compound to fill cracks, allowing them to blend better aesthetically. Severe cracks may require cutting out and replacing that section.
  5. Direct Water Away Install proper roof gutters, downspout extensions, splash blocks, etc. to carry rainwater off and away from the foundation. Well-draining soil also helps prevent puddling.

With consistent inspection and care, your attractive stucco siding will showcase curb appeal and enhance resale value for decades on end. In case you ever find yourself needing stucco repair, reach out us.
